Happy Birthday, Fred and George
Apr. 1st, 2007 05:29 pmI'm running a bit late with this one, and my wrist is killing me so I wasn't quite as detailed as usual. However, I'd say this one's accurate enough to post even without much of my commentary. Quotes are from The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers.
Aries - April 1 - The Day of Dignity
"Strengths: Goal-Oriented, Sincere, Technically Skillful
Weaknesses: Isolated, One-Track, Workaholic"
I think "sincere" depends on the situation. "Isolated" is pretty relative, too. They seem popular in the books, but have no problem with distancing themselves from others when they're scheming.
"Those born on April 1 are usually straightforward, self-disciplined, thoughtful and hard-working people. Although they may be masters of their craft, they rarely if ever flaunt their talents."
They're definitely smart, although their grades don't show it. They're more interested in channeling their energy into their pranks and inventions than into school. However, the stuff they invent does require an unusual amount of talent and creativity.
"Even as children they manifest a serious, conscientious attitude toward daily life, shouldering many responsibilities other children would find a burden. As they grow, they invariably develop into reliable figures who friends and family can depend on year in and year out."
One clear manifestation of this is how they defend Harry (in their own way) from the negative opinions of the school. Another example: how they react to the success of their joke shop, and becoming independent. They buy their mother a gift (a nice hat) and tell her they appreciate her.
"Although the star quality of an April 1 person is undeniable, they do not seek the limelight early in life. It is not being the center of attention which is important to them, but being at the center of what is happening. All they really want is to get on with their work. Indeed, their fixation on work is pronounced and they are likely to be certified workaholics at various times in their lives."
We see hints of this from Harry's point of view. Fred and George are smart enough to get good grades, and popular enough to be the center of attention, but they put all else aside to work on their inventions.
"The subtleties of technique can become a mania for an April 1 person. They are interested in mastering every aspect of what they do; to ask others for help would only be an embarrassment for them. Super-capable, they usually learn their craft on their own, outside of school. Attending classes can make them itchy; many born on this day can't wait to leave school in order to begin their self-educative process. Able to learn from experience and observe the methods of those they admire, they soon develop a style which is uniquely their own."
Well, we've seen their various attempts to recruit testers to help perfect their inventions. And their exit from school is a glorious affair which includes a broom ride into the sunset.
"It is not their own success that concerns them, rather the success of their projects and endeavors."
To me, that means they let their work speak for them.
"The drive is very strong in April 1 people to bring matters of concern to a satisfactory conclusion. Thus they will finish a project no matter how much energy is required or how great the sacrifice. April 1 people do not depend on others to provide pleasure for them, and do not surround themselves with friends or admirers."
As stated, they have the ability to draw a crowd, but in the end that seems to be just a diversion in pursuit of perfecting their craft.
"April 1 people may have a problem of demanding too much from themselves -- thus they must avoid taking on too many projects at one time. The only recreation attractive to these disciplined individuals is often itself a hobby, which they pursue with such zeal that others may mistake it for work."
Yeah, I'd say anyone that can make mischief into an art form, and the act of getting into trouble into a budding career, fits this description.

Date: 2007-04-02 11:22 am (UTC)The twins are definitely not solely build after this description. If you asked most people after the twins weaknesses, they would hardly think of "isolated", but rather "cruel" or anything in that direction. Maybe you can translate "lack of empathy" to "isolated"...
But all this "can't wait to leave school to try out their significant talent in the real world" stuff is extremely fitting, of course, so I do think JK was inspired by the book again.
