Parallels and Comparisons
Feb. 2nd, 2009 02:57 amI took a leisurely re-read of the series in December/January. While re-reading CoS, I noticed (for the first time, argh!) the parallel between Aunt Petunia's comments about bad blood (and comparing Harry's mother to a dog) with the pure blood obsession and less-than-human view of such people by Death Eater/pro-Voldemort folks in the magical world.
I'm now starting to wonder what other parallels may have been lingering in my blind spot for years. So, I'm going to list the ones that occur to me as I think of them. I'll also be seeking out essays and meta stuff. Links and comments heartily welcomed.
(Just a few to start out.)
Character Parallels - Lasting, notable similarities between characters.
Dumbledore and Grindelwald - machinations for 'the greater good', although Dumbledore's schemes did legitimately produce such results in the end.
Dumbledore and Snape - regret as a life-changing force.
Dumbledore and Voldemort - brilliant minds, using people as tools.
Harry and Neville - both potentially the boy in the prophecy, both with 'absent' parents (Neville's less so, obviously), both Horcrux destroyers.
Harry and Snape - neglected in childhood (clothing), both loved/loved by Lily at some point.
Harry and Voldemort - orphaned, considered Hogwarts their true homes, Parseltongue.
Lily and Ginny - red hair, some version of an idealized girl/woman.
Snape and Petunia - harbor intense emotions toward Harry based on emotions they had about Lily.
Snape and Voldemort - dark arts, self-given title.
Issue Parallels
Bad blood - Pure blood extremists in the magical world, Aunt Petunia's comments about bad blood in dog breeding (referencing Harry's mother).
War marriage - Molly and Arthur likened to Remus and Tonks, Bill and Fleur.
