*taps the mic*
Jan. 7th, 2012 07:46 pmAhoy, journal that no one reads! I have things to report.
At my husband's suggestion, I read The Watchmen, and now I'm into it. I've been putting off watching the movie, although I think I'll do that tonight.
Last time I got super involved with fandom stuff, I was alone and romantically uninvolved, but my life was full and stressful, and I found myself reading fics as a way to decompress. More recently, I've finished two back-to-back semesters of counseling practicum, and am starting a third. I still work two jobs. I've really taken to my role as a new step-parent, but that's also a stressor. The sum of all that is, I figure some fandom involvement could do me good at this point. I feel compelled, so I'm going to let it happen.
Long story short, I think Rorschach is cool.
He is the Snape of the series, really (and I know that comparison is backwards, since HP came out a decade after The Watchmen did). They're both rough men, morally complex, with troubled childhoods and a sense of duty that eventually kills them.
Rorschach, specifically, interests me because of:
(1) His issues with women. Seriously, there's so much to this that I'd like to analyze and discuss with other folks. Heck, his family of origin and attachment style by itself could comprise at least one essay.
(2) His approach to morality. I'm liberal as fuck, but I grew up conservative and I can understand the comfort of a non-relative moral standard, especially in the face of a chaotic world. Plus, I agree with him at the end. Sacrificing people for the greater good might be moral on paper, but it still sucks in the long run because it won't foster a lasting peace (which I think was an implied point by Dr. Manhattan at the closing).
(3) The connection between his character and the Rorschach test, and more generally, psychology and the idea of individual perception differences. As someone who knows a fair bit about assessments, I admit that I like the ink blot test, even though lots of folks think it's unscientific, cold-reading crap. (Then again, I like the MBTI as well, so my taste in assessments might be a bit forgiving by scientific standards).
So anyway, here I am.
